Book Talk Tuesday: Keeper by Kathi Appelt

Keeper by Kathi Appelt is the type of book that stays with you.    If you haven’t read it yet, you should.  It’s a book that will keep you thinking for days. It’s the day of the summer’s blue moon and everything has to be just perfect.  But 10-year-old Keeper, has the worse luck, beginning with the talking crabs.

Keeper’s mother has been gone for seven years, her guardian, Signe, is getting ready to make a dish that can ony be made on a blue moon, and when a series of events go wrong, Keeper thinks the only way to make everything right is to find her mermaid mother.  Yes, Keeper believes her mother is a mermaid.  She sets sail with her dog BD (Best Dog)  and end u beyond the bar into the Gulf of Mexico.  What happens in the 24 hour period will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Appelt has created a wonderfully beautiful set of characters that will remind readers of people they know.  The magical weaving of Keeper’s story with stories and legends of mermaid makes the story stand out.
