Poetry Friday: National Poetry Month

Poetry Friday is hosted by Amy of The Poem Farm.
In January, Michelle at Today’s Little Ditty featured Joyce Sidman.  The DMC was to write a poem expressing a ‘deeper truth’.  Our fifth graders have researched nonfiction topics of their choice.  So in library, I had them list what they remembered and then write a ‘deeper truth’ poem about their subject. I discovered that fifth graders needed a bit more scaffolding as well as talking about their poems being personification poems in a way.  They rose to the occasion.  Here’s three to share today.  There will be more in the month.

National Poetry Month Featuring Student Work

Great new NPM button found at Jama’s Alphabet Soup.

Each year I like to feature the work of my students at Silver Star Elementary.  Some of you might find a poetry postcard in your mailbox this month.

To begin, these are third grade students.  The assignment was to research an animal in order to create an animal poem for the poetry project.  I discovered Pic Monkey and am having lots of fun with it.

National Poetry Month: 2015 Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem

2015ProgressivePoemVisit Live Your Poem To see the poem unfold.

Welcome to National Poetry Month.  Last year, I missed out on participating in the Progressive Poem Party (much like a progressive dinner but with poetry). Irene invited me to start off this year.

I am anxious to see where it travels and how it unfolds..  A friend recently said to me, “Live without a net.”  Great line. So with that idea in mind, and the word alluvium,  here’s my opening line for 2015:

She lives without a net, walking on the alluvium  of the delta

Now Joy will add on to this line.
