Thanks to Irene at Live Your Poem for hosting Poetry Friday today.
I’m so excited for this weekend! I’ll be in Bellingham, WA listening to student poets and Naomi Shihab Nye. Nye is giving the 2018 Arbuthnot Honor Lecture.
Back in March, Western Washington University planned a workshop about the poetry of Naomi Shihab Nye. The fabulous Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell were the leaders.
One activity was to take poems that Naomi Shihab Nye gave permission to use and create poem collages. So Poetry Rocks worked on collages as a project for me to take to the conference. Yes, Southwest Washington will be represented!
So here is a peek of some that are going. Plus as always in Poetry Rocks, I had students make collages of their own work.
Two original ode collages:

Oh, how I love those collages! They add layers and layers of meaning to the poems!
What a great idea, Jone. I think I will share this activity with teachers during PD on writing. Thanks so much.
Credit Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell. It was their suggestion.
Many thanks to Michaiah H. for the Silver Star Postcard Project she created. Shirley Chisholm was a great choice because I have an activity I share with teachers on making Trading Cards of Famous People. I can pair Michaiah’s work with that activity as a student show and tell. “She seeks freedom like a tiger.” Please extend my thanks to her and I will share this online.
These are great! What a great idea to use the actual poems as collage, too. I especially loved the two original Ode collages!
