So today’s poem is the result of the fourth grade class researching important African-Americans earlier this year.
It started as a research project to take notes in two different formats and determine what was important about that person. Rather than to have students write about the person in paragraphs, I had them create a poem.
I provided some scaffolding for poems but in Emily’s poem, she made it her own. Nice job, Emily!
Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald sang like the wind
when it went by the sound of music
I see by my eye
I felt the music
that’s Ella Fitzgerald’s music going by.

Oh my goodness. This is perfect in its simplicity.
Great job, Emily. I can hear that music going by now.
Emily,
What a lovely poem. Keep writing!

Dear Emily,
A poem can bring a person back to life for a bit. And you did that with your words. What a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald!
Thank you for sharing this with all of us.

A poem instead of a paragraph — BRILLIANT!
Lovely.
